I don’t have anything exciting to report for the last 24 hours. The reason is because it was a “maintenance day.” I’ve learned with long term travel you need a few days to perform tasks that allow the adventure to continue. Here are some examples: catching up on emails, organizing transportation, and doing laundry (I did it in the sink because the hotel service was unavailable). This type of travel makes you keenly aware of each item you are carrying, along with its importance. I only have one pair of pants that are appropriate for getting wet and for digging. However, the waist button popped off several days ago. At home, the problem has a simple solution. In my best pathetic voice, I tell my wife what happened, then look absolutely helpless. Overnight, the button fairy visits the house and everything is fixed the next day. For some unknown reason, this doesn’t work on the road. I told many people about my problem in the most helpless voice possible, but the button remained stubbornly broken. Perhaps the magic only works in Ohio? So, I had to embark upon an adventure to find a sewing kit. I spent most of the morning doing something I’ve never done before: pants repair. My job isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s held so far. One thing I’ve learned: I have a whole new appreciation for my button fairy.
